UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Mevleviye is an ascetic Sufi order founded in 1273 in Konya, from where it gradually spread throughout the Ottoman Empire. Today, the Mevleviye can be found in many Turkish communities throughout the world, but the most active and famous centres of the orders activity are in Konya and Istanbul. The Mevleviye are renowned for their whirling dances. Following a recommended fast of several hours, the whirlers begin to rotate on their left feet in short twists, using the right foot to drive their bodies around the left foot. The body of the whirler is meant to be supple, with eyes open but unfocused so that images become blurred and flowing. At their dancing ceremonies, or Sema, a particular musical repertoire called ay›n is played. Based on four sections of both vocal and instrumental compositions, it is performed by at least one singer, a flute-player, called neyzen, a kettledrummer and a cymbal player. Dancers used to receive 1001 days of reclusive training within the mevlevi-houses (mevlevihane), where they learned about ethics, codes of behaviour and beliefs by practising prayer, religious music, poetry and dance. After this training, they remained members of the order but returned to their work and families. As a result of secularization policies, all mevlevihane were closed in 1925.The Turkish government began to allow performances again, though only ...

The Sema Ceremony commemorates the passing of Hz. Mevlana Jelaluddin RUMI, known in the west as a 13th-century mystic poet. He also founded the Mevlevi Sufi Order, still active worldwide 733 years after his passing from this world. This clip shows Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi Order of America in the Sema Ceremony in Istanbul, December 2005. We presented the Sema Ceremony in Eugene, Seattle and Portland December 2006, and will present Sema in Honolulu, Maui, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in December 2007. O surrender in love, You have given me a taste that pales all worldliness No desire remains In the heart filled with submission ... Neither distance nor fear... Neither hope nor prayer Neither thoughts of subjugation Nor desire of godliness No place for exchange of words... No occasion for further quest Where neither conciousness reaches Nor thoughts transcend its realm No one resides...Neither habitation exists Is where this wandering heart has come to camp. Where there is no union...No separation No sorrow...No joy What is said to be endless oblivion I enter such a slumber.

Whirling Dervishes perform Mevlevi Order (Persian: مولويه - Molaviyeh) in Konya ; RUMI
The Mevlevi Order, or the Mevlevilik or Mevleviye (Persian: مولويه - Molavīyeh) are a Sufi order founded in Konya (in present-day Turkey) by the followers of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi-Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet, Islamic jurist, and theologian. They are also known as the Whirling Dervishes due to their famous practice of whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of God). Dervish is a common term for an initiate of the Sufi path; the whirling is part of the formal Sama ceremony and the participants are properly known as semazen-s. In 2005, UNESCO proclaimed the "The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony" of Turkey as amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
